The Flamingo Regatta
Join the FUN and FUNdraise!
Since the 2021 inaugral Flamingo Regatta we have welcomed vessels ranging from racing Hobies and a Laser to 55-footers, monohulls and multi-hulls. In the spirit of the FUN part of the event, we also encourage costumes, signs, water pistols, and all the flamingo decorations the crew can muster.
There is no entry fee. Each boat is encouraged to donate for the cause, and/or ask friends and family to donate in their boat name. In the spirit of competition, we award prizes to the race winners and to the boats with the highest donation amounts.
The on-the-water event is a pursuit race with assigned ratings and starting times. The 1 p.m. start is downwind in front of Barra. The course takes you towards the beach to make a port rounding towards Melaque. After another port rounding in Melaque bay, a reach back to the starting line for a second lap. In all, approx. 7 nautical miles of sailing fun with the lead boat usually finishing in just under an hour. We average 22-25 boats in the race.
The race is also intended to be entertainment for the public watching from shore. We have designated viewing sites (bars) where the public can purchase raffle tickets to "bet" on a boat. Tickets can be purchased and placed in a boat's envelope up until the first boat makes the 2nd turn in Melaque. Tickets for the winning boat are drawn for donated raffle prizes. Past races have raised over 40,000 pesos just from these betting tickets!
All participants and volunteers for the week's events are invited to the post-race awards party with a no-host bar.
